SAPPORO Flower Carpet 2016 will be held over a 3-day period from Friday, June 17 to Sunday, June 19 at Sapporo Kita 3-jo Plaza (hereafter referred to as Akapla).
Flower Carpet is a biennial event that is held in the Belgian capital of Brussels, in which a large picture is created using flower petals and other natural materials.
This will be the 3rd time the event has been held in Sapporo since 2014, and at last year’s event, 500 volunteers filled the plaza with the petals of approximately 120,000 flowers to create a vividly colored picture that attracted approximately 100,000 visitors over the 3-day period.
The Flower Carpet event is possible thanks to the generous support of many individuals and organizations who have volunteered to donate at least 1,000 yen each to fund it. For more details, please visit the website. *Donation exemption does not apply
This year, too, let’s create a colorful flower carpet together.

What is a Flower Carpet?
- A Flower Carpet usually forms part of a famous flower festival known as Corpus Domini (to celebrate the communion of Christ), which takes place in countries around the world, particularly in Europe, in countries such as Italy and Spain.
- The carpet is created not by specialist artists, but by members of the general public. Indeed, it is art for the people, by the people.
Flower Carpets spreading around the world
- Currently, this Flower Carpet enjoys mutual exchanges with over 50 regions, including Italy, Spain, Belgium, France, Mexico and Tibet, and in Japan it is also held in Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe and other cities. It was held in Sapporo for the first time in 2014, and again in 2015 after rave reviews.
