Sosei River, once called "Otomo-bori", is a manmade river which played a major role in the development of Sapporo, which is the special feature at this time.
A Specialty Shopping Area Surviving the Times
"Nijo Market" along the Sousei River. Located at the entrance of the Sosei Higashi Area, it’s a great place to start walking through the town.
The Nijo Market today is known as a tourist spot in Sapporo. Visitors from overseas call it the Nijo Fish Market. But what about the Sapporo locals? As I meandered through the market, I asked, “Do you have a recommendation for me as a Sapporo local?”
Sapporo's Nijo Market- 150 years of history. I learned why people walk through it, eat here, and have loved it for many years.
Sosei River Park is a small park in the heart of the city. Colored by greenery and art, it's a great place to take a stroll and sense the history of the area.
Making, Connecting- with Tongu as the “focal point”
In the harsh snowy winter, it is difficult to visit the Hokkaido Jingu Shrine. So the Hokkaido Jingu Tongu Shrine was established in 1878 as a place to worship and offer prayers. In 1947, with a request to become a guardian deity of the district, Tongu was enshrined and became a subordinate Sapporo Jinja (Shrine). Since about two years ago a group of people gathered by Tongu began activities to develop the Sousei Higashi area and to revitalize the town in consideration of the region.
The Hokkaido Jingu "Tongu" (banch shrine). Standing in front of the beautiful shrine structure with its dignified atmosphere, it’s easy to forget you are in the center of a large city. Sometimes called "Tongu-san," this place has been the venue of the Sapporo Shitamachi Marché from the past two years. We asked about the new movement taking place at the downtown shrine.
At Tongu you can find Sapporo’s oldest "Komainu"(guardian lion-dogs). Tongu has the reputation of bringing blessings to match-making, and the number of young people who visit the shrine has been increasing. From this attractive little shrine, the driving force of town planning has been born.
Walking in Sosei Higashi by Keyword
Nipponseishu Co., Ltd., which is right in front of the Toyohira River, is the oldest existing sake brewery in Hokkaido. It uses the underground water of the Toyohira River in its sake brewing. It continues to make a clear, smooth sake suitable to the northern territories by scooping up pure water with a moderate mineral content from a well dug 150 meters under the brewery.
We visited the old-timey restaurant row under the Chuo Bus Sapporo Terminal, a well-kept secret.
"Guesthouse" is a word that is often heard recently, but what kind of a place is it? I went to stay at Guesthouse Yuyu, which has recently opened in the Sosei Higashi district of Sapporo.
A high quality map is like a library full of history books of the area. Let’s follow an old map to learn the details of Sosei Higashi as we walk through town.
The history of "Sosei Higashi" began in the early years of Meiji period as a high-tech industrial center of the day. From this page in history, we can learn what makes Hokkaido, Hokkaido.
Although Sosei Higashi neighbors the city center, it has a unique and special atmosphere. One hint to unravel the mystery can be found in the history of Sapporo’s foundation and its ground water veins.
Churches are located on the east and west border of Sosei Higashi. What is significant about churches in the city development of Sapporo during the Meiji Period?
Sosei Higashi was the eastern edge of Sapporo for a long time, until the merger of Shiroishi-mura and Toyohira-cho with the city of Sapporo. It was a time of great wealth disparities, when the poor gathered at the side of the Toyohira River.
